"The works depicting myself and other strong, active and assertive female figures such as in Kaleidoscopic kick, Shotokan Autoportrait, Self Portrait Etching and Trigger all seek to challenge the stereotypes still so often attributed to women. I have been using the self-portrait throughout my practice as a means to emancipate the image of women, and as a tool of empowerment and self-determination. I also studied Shotokan martial arts, and that’s captured specifically in the kick pieces." Chila Kumari Singh Burman.
Chila's belief is that there are no rules when it comes to printmaking. Each piece is unique, and you’ll see bindis, fake gems and found objects incorporated into some of the works.
