Product Story

Beautiful coppiced hazel, crafted into a modern coffee table

Awarded the Heal’s Discovers prize for his handcrafted collection of furniture, Sebastian Cox uses a specific type of coppiced hazel grown and harvested locally in the UK shortly before he begins working the material.

Each piece is made by the designers own hands, reflecting a design process that originates mainly from the workbench rather than the drawing board.

Designed to celebrate the Arts and Crafts heritage of Heal's, this coffee table consists of a coppiced hazel frame with a smoothly carved oak frame and top gently raised above the base.

Made from naturally finished hazel, the beams of each frame will have a slightly irregular shape that reflects the unique qualities of the timber.

At the heart of his practice is a focus on developing objects that use local materials and traditional techniques while incorporating a contemporary aesthetic that appeals to modern homes. For his Oak and Hazel range, Sebastian relied solely on traditionally coppiced hazel that has been grown on his family farm in Kent and solid oak sourced from sustainable British woodlands.
