Teak and other dense hardwoods weather gracefully, silvering to a soft grey that many prefer to the original golden tone. Powder-coated aluminium and steel resist rust and suit contemporary schemes. Natural stone tops bring a sculptural weight but need covering in winter. Polywood and HDPE composites offer the durability of plastic with the look of timber.

A 140cm rectangular table comfortably seats four for summer dining, a 180cm seats six, and a 240cm seats eight with room for a wine cooler. Round outdoor tables at 120cm seat four, 150cm seat six. Leave more clearance around outdoor tables than indoor, around 90cm, since chairs tend to push back further on uneven paving.

Teak and oiled hardwoods can stand uncovered year-round, weathering naturally, though a breathable cover shortens the time spent cleaning in spring. Aluminium and steel tables benefit from covers or winter storage, particularly those with painted finishes. Stone and concrete tops need covering to prevent frost damage to the sealed surface.

Many outdoor-rated tables translate well to utility rooms, conservatories and verandas where the rustic or industrial finish suits the indoor-outdoor flow. Smaller bistro tables in particular work well as hallway consoles or occasional tables, bringing the weathered quality of the garden piece inside without the formal furniture expectation.
