Lottie Day is a British designer producing hand-printed textiles, ceramics and lifestyle pieces from a Sussex studio, with a visual language drawn from Cornish coastal landscapes, British wildflowers, and folk-art motifs. The collection covers cushions, lampshades, tea towels, and painted ceramics, each produced in small batches by the designer and a small team.

    Lottie Day is a Sussex-based brand, with design and much of the production handled by the designer and a small team in the workshop. Larger production runs use British partner manufacturers chosen for alignment with the brand's hand-made ethos. The Sussex base gives the range a distinctly British coastal character.

    The range includes hand-printed cushions, tea towels, napkins, lampshades, painted ceramic plates and mugs, and occasional small prints and gift items. The common thread is hand-printing and hand-painting, which adds variation between nominally identical pieces and connects the brand to British craft traditions.

    Most Lottie Day hand-painted ceramics benefit from handwashing to preserve the surface detail over time. The brand is open about the difference between everyday-use and occasion-use pieces, clearly flagged on each product page. Dishwasher use is technically possible for many pieces but reduces the lifespan of the hand-painted finish.

    Lottie Day hand-printed tea towels and napkins are machine-washable on a 40-degree cotton cycle, with the printed designs holding up well across years of washing. Cushion covers are removable for washing, following the care instructions on the label. A cold wash preserves the print for longer, which the brand recommends for pieces that see heavy daily use.

      To mark the birthday of the late great British designer Robin Day, we’re looking to the Heal’s archive to rediscover the award winning storage unit that helped launch his name. A man of many talents, Day began his career in the 1940s as a teacher at Beckenham School of Art where he first met fellow fan of modernist furniture Clive Latimer. It wasn’t, however, until 1948 that the pair would produce the piece that would gain them international acclaim. The 675 Chair Designed amidst a post war climate of rationing, Day and Latimer’s storage system was built from affordable yet robust plywood and supported by bent, tubular legs made from recycled aluminium. The result was a contemporary piece of furniture very much in keeping with the bright new mid-century style that was beginning to emerge from the doldrums of wartime austerity. Originally designed for Heal’s, the multifunctional storage unit was entered into the ‘International Low-Cost Furniture Competition’ at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York taking first place in the storage section. An international platform on which to showcase Day’s potential, the event acted as a springboard for the designer’s career. Yet few could have predicted the impact he would have, producing some of the most ubiquitous and iconic pieces of the 20th Century.
