Dinner Candles

Our dinner and pillar candles set the rhythm of an evening, from the first lit taper at the start of dinner to the slow-burning pillar on a side table hours later. Made from clean-burning waxes and unscented to keep the dining experience centred on the food, each shape is cut to sit steady in its holder and drip minimally across a tablecloth.

A 25cm dinner candle burns for roughly six to eight hours when lit in a draft-free room, enough for one generous dinner party or two shorter evenings. Keeping the wick trimmed to 5mm and the candle away from air currents extends the burn and prevents the uneven drip that shortens a taper's usable life.

Unscented dinner candles are the considered choice for the table: a fragrance on the wick competes with food aromatics and can overwhelm wine, so the classic dining candle is deliberately neutral. Save scented pillar candles for side tables and mantels, where the fragrance has room to breathe without interfering with the meal.

A dinner candle is a tall, slim taper usually 20 to 30cm in height, designed to sit in a single-stem holder at each place or centrepiece. A pillar candle is self-supporting, sitting on a broad base without a holder and burning down through its diameter for 20 to 40 hours, making it the longer-format option for mantels and side tables.

Well-made coloured candles use dye dispersed evenly through the wax, which melts without releasing pigment onto the tablecloth below. Problems arise with cheaper dipped candles where the colour sits as a surface layer, so when shopping, look for candles marked 'solid-dyed' or 'coloured through' for linen-safe confidence.
