Jugs and Pitchers

A jug or pitcher does the simplest serving job at the table – water in summer, juice at breakfast, wine for an outdoor lunch – but the right one earns its place as a piece of design as much as a serving vessel. Our collection covers hand-blown glass, hand-thrown ceramic, recycled glass and stainless steel jugs from leading European houses, in capacities from compact 500ml pieces to generous 1.5-litre pitchers.

1-1.5 litres is the comfortable size for a 4-6 person dining table – enough water for an average meal without needing a refill, not so much that it's heavy to lift. Larger jugs (2 litres plus) suit garden tables and longer outdoor meals where the refill traffic is higher.

Glazed ceramic and quality glass handle daily wear well; stainless steel is the most robust and a popular choice for outdoor or family use. Recycled glass and hand-blown pieces add character but typically have thinner walls than commercial restaurant glassware – not delicate, just less hardy under heavy use.

Yes – an empty jug is one of the most useful flower vessels in a household. Wide-mouth jugs work best for loose, garden-picked arrangements; narrow-spouted jugs suit one or two single-stem statements. The handle gives the arrangement a slightly informal, French-country feel that styling-purposed vases rarely match.

Quality jugs last decades and earn their place as both objects and serving vessels. Hand-thrown ceramic pieces in particular develop a warmth and surface depth that mass-produced equivalents can't match, and they often appear in collected homes as heirloom-grade pieces. Cheaper jugs typically chip, stain or break within a few years.
