    A tripod floor lamp works hardest next to a sofa arm, behind an armchair for over-shoulder reading, or in an otherwise empty corner where its silhouette earns its keep. Keep the base at least 20cm clear of upholstery and rugs so the three legs have room to splay without catching.

    A comfortable reading height puts the bottom of the shade at around 100 to 110cm from the floor when you're seated on a standard sofa, so the light falls on your book rather than glaring at the person opposite. Taller lamps at 150cm and above act as ambient lights for the whole room rather than task lights.

    Tripod lamps suit smaller rooms surprisingly well because their visual weight sits at the base rather than spreading across a rectangular table. A slim brass tripod tucked beside a chair adds height and drama without stealing floor space from the room's other pieces.

    A warm-white LED bulb at around 2700K delivers the living-room glow most tripod lamps are built to cast, while a soft-white 3000K option keeps things brighter for task reading. Match the bulb's wattage to the shade's stated maximum, and consider a dimmable bulb if the lamp sits in an evening-use zone.
