    A light fitting is the fixture that holds the bulb, including the ceiling rose, the cable or stem, the shade, and the bulb holder itself. The bulb is the replaceable light source. Most shoppers replace bulbs every few years but keep the fitting for the lifetime of a room, so the fitting deserves a more considered investment.

    Replacing a simple pendant fitting in a UK home requires turning off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit and matching live, neutral, and earth wires from the old fitting to the new. Anything involving new cabling or a shift from single to three-core should be done by a qualified electrician to meet Part P of the Building Regulations.

    UK homes most commonly use the B22 bayonet fitting for ceiling lights and the E27 screw fitting for modern pendant and table lamps. Smaller lamps and spotlights use E14 or GU10 bases. Always check the fitting code on the bulb before buying, as an E27 bulb won't fit a B22 holder and vice versa, despite looking superficially similar.

    Modern fittings are fully LED-compatible, but older houses with dimmer switches may need the dimmer itself replaced to work with LEDs, as legacy dimmers were calibrated for incandescent loads. An LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmer costs around twenty pounds and an electrician fits it in half an hour.
