Tumblers & Highballs

The glasses that do the quiet daily work and still look right on a dressed drinks tray. Short tumblers for a whisky neat or on the rocks, taller highballs with room for ice and a long pour, from soft-edged recycled glass to cut crystal. The ones you reach for at breakfast and again at seven, without a second thought.

A tumbler is short and straight-sided, holding around 250 to 350ml for water, squash or spirits served neat or on the rocks. A highball is taller at 350 to 450ml, designed for longer mixed drinks like a gin and tonic where the height leaves room for ice and a tall pour.

Most glass tumblers are dishwasher-safe, though hand-blown pieces fare better on a gentle cycle around 50 degrees than a hot intensive wash. Always check the care label, as some cut or etched pieces keep their surface detail longer when hand-washed.

Six of each is a comfortable minimum, enough for a small dinner party without constant washing up. Households that host often prefer twelve, split between a casual everyday glass and something more formal, so there is a clear choice for guests.

Standard tumblers can crack with a sudden temperature shift, so look for borosilicate or double-walled designs marked heat-resistant if the glass is for tea or coffee. Pouring hot liquid into ordinary glass is a common cause of breakages and easily avoided.
