Mattress Toppers & Protectors

Mattress toppers and protectors extend the life of a good mattress, softening a firmer base, guarding against spills, and adding a layer of natural warmth in winter. Our collection includes Hungarian goose-down toppers, merino wool underlays, and waterproof protectors cut to UK sizes from single up to super-king.

A topper is a thick comfort layer of 3 to 8cm designed to change how the mattress feels, adding softness or warmth. A protector is a thin, fitted sheet-like layer that guards against spills, skin oils and dust mites without altering the feel underneath. Most beds benefit from a protector year-round and a topper swapped in for winter.

A 5 to 8cm feather-and-down or memory-foam topper noticeably softens a firm mattress, taking a 7-out-of-10 build down to a perceived 5 or 6. It cannot rescue a mattress that's too firm by design for your sleeping position, but it can fine-tune an otherwise correct mattress or buy time before a full replacement.

Older plastic-backed protectors crinkled with every movement, but modern waterproof membranes use a silent polyurethane layer bonded to cotton terry, so there's no noticeable sound during the night. Look for protectors marked 'silent' or 'noiseless' and check the reviews if any concern remains before committing.

Wash a mattress protector every two to three months alongside the pillow protectors, or more often if a pet sleeps on the bed. Follow the label temperature, usually 40 to 60 degrees, and tumble-dry on low to preserve the waterproof membrane. A good protector lasts 3 to 5 years with this routine.
