    Pull one colour from the lampshade's pattern that repeats somewhere else in the room, whether that's a cushion, a rug or an artwork. That single visual link is usually enough to integrate the shade without any further matching, and lets the pattern do the work of adding interest without crowding the palette.

    A patterned cotton or linen shade casts slightly warmer, softer light than a plain white one, with the colours of the pattern subtly filtering the light cast onto walls and surfaces. Darker patterns absorb more light, reducing overall brightness, so pair with a higher-lumen bulb if the lamp is a primary room-light rather than decorative.

    Most patterned shades come with standard UK fittings, sized to fit ES (E27) or BC (B22) bases, and are interchangeable with plain shades on the same base. Check the shade's inner fitting type and the lamp's holder before ordering, especially when combining a modern shade with a vintage or designer base.

    Vacuum with a soft brush attachment every few months to lift dust from the pattern before it becomes embedded in the fibre. Spot-clean marks with a damp cloth and mild detergent, testing on an inner seam first. Avoid soaking, which can warp the shade's structure and cause the pattern's dye to run on printed cottons.
