    A quilt has three layers (top, wadding, backing) stitched together in a pattern, giving a lightly padded feel. A bedspread is a single woven or layered textile without stitched wadding, sitting flatter and usually thinner. Quilts bring texture and warmth; bedspreads bring colour and polish without adding significant weight.

    Full coverage quilts run to 240 by 260cm for a king bed, reaching down past the mattress on all three exposed sides and tucking up over the pillows. Duvet-top quilts sit shorter at 200 by 230cm, leaving the pillows exposed. The full-coverage option reads more traditional; the duvet-top option more modern. Either works, provided the quilt is sized consistently with the finish.

    Wool bedspreads add noticeable warmth without the weight of a heavier duvet, making them useful for UK bedrooms that run cold at night. Modern merino and cashmere blends are machine-washable on a wool cycle, so the care burden is lower than vintage wool throws.     Fold the bedspread lengthwise in thirds, then again into a compact bundle and store at the foot of the bed on a storage chest, or inside a linen cupboard with a sachet of lavender or cedar to deter moths.
