    Quality construction (proper foam or hollowfibre filling that doesn't compress within months), removable washable covers, and materials that age into the room rather than against it. A £30 bed typically lasts six months; a £150 bed lasts five years and looks like it belongs in the sitting room rather than hidden behind the sofa. The economics work out comparable; the visual difference is substantial.

    Most dogs prefer beds against a wall or in a corner – somewhere with a backstop and a clear view of the room. Avoid placing the bed in high-traffic walking paths or near the front door (where comings and goings disturb sleep). A bed beside the sofa or under a side table tends to work for dogs that want to be near the family but have their own space.

    Ceramic is the most hygienic – non-porous glazes don't harbour bacteria the way scratched plastic does, and ceramic doesn't transfer flavours or odours to food. Stainless steel is similarly hygienic and lighter. Plastic bowls are the cheapest but degrade fastest and can cause chin acne in dogs over long-term use. For most households, ceramic is the considered default.
