Wool is naturally resilient, fire-retardant and stain-resistant, making it one of the best performing fibres for a rug. It holds dye well, which produces deep, long-lasting colours, and its natural crimp adds bounce underfoot. Quality wool rugs typically outlast synthetic alternatives by decades.

Vacuum wool rugs weekly on a low-to-medium setting, avoiding beater brushes that can pull the pile. Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, working from the outside in, and use a mild wool-safe detergent if needed. Professional cleaning every two to three years keeps the rug looking fresh.

Most new wool rugs shed loose fibres for the first few months, which is a normal part of hand-tufted and hand-knotted production. Vacuum regularly during this period and shedding will gradually slow. Flatweave and hand-knotted wool rugs shed less than hand-tufted ones.

Wool rugs generally work well with underfloor heating, provided the manufacturer confirms compatibility and you choose a flatweave or lower-pile design that allows heat to pass through. Very dense, high-pile wool rugs can insulate the floor and reduce heating efficiency. Check product specifications before buying.
