    Teak, powder-coated aluminium and composite stone are the most durable materials for outdoor side tables, all of which cope with British weather when cared for properly. Teak weathers to silver-grey over time unless oiled annually. Avoid untreated softwoods and unsealed natural stone, which can crack in frost.

    Garden side tables generally sit between 45cm and 55cm tall, roughly level with the arm of an outdoor sofa or lounger. A diameter of 40–50cm provides space for a drink, book and pair of sunglasses without feeling cramped. Slim pedestal bases suit smaller terraces.

    Cover or store garden side tables during very wet or freezing weather to extend their lifespan. Breathable covers prevent moisture build-up, which can encourage mould. Teak pieces can be oiled annually to maintain the golden tone or left to weather naturally to a soft silver grey.

    Weather-resistant garden side tables can move indoors for use in orangeries, conservatories and transitional rooms. Teak and aluminium work particularly well against wooden floors, though protect polished surfaces with felt feet. Stone-topped tables should be moved with care, as they can be heavy.
