A standard lamp (the traditional term for a floor-standing lamp) delivers task or ambient light beside seating or reading nooks without claiming a surface for itself. Our standard lamp range includes tripod bases, slim-stemmed directional readers, oversized arc lamps and sculptural forms in brass, bronze, blackened steel and timber. Every lamp is wired to UK electrical standards.

    Standard lamp' is the traditional British term for a floor-standing lamp, typically paired with an armchair or sofa for reading and ambient light. The term dates to the early 20th century and remains in use, though 'floor lamp' is increasingly common. Both refer to the same category of fixture.

    A standard lamp works best beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa, where it provides reading-level light without requiring a separate side table. Corners of rooms also suit taller lamps, where they add vertical architecture to the space. Avoid placing standard lamps in walkways where they can be knocked.

    Most standard lamps stand between 140 and 180cm, with the shade bottom roughly at eye level when seated for comfortable reading light. Taller arc lamps extend to 200cm for overhead positioning. Match the lamp scale to the furniture beside it rather than an absolute measure.

    A standard lamp alone rarely provides enough distributed light for a full room, though a high-output lamp can substantially brighten a smaller room. Combining the standard lamp with ceiling and accent sources creates the layered scheme that rooms genuinely need. Relying on one fixture flattens the space.
