    Choose a core palette – gold and green, red and white, or monochrome – and stick to it. Add a small number of new pieces each year in the same palette rather than buying whole new sets. Keep a box for retirement: anything that's lost its shine or looks dated goes out, so the collection gets better, not bigger.

    Hand-blown glass catches light in a way moulded plastic simply doesn't, giving a tree depth and movement even when the lights are off. They're also heavier, which means they hang properly rather than bouncing on the branch. Handle them with care and they'll outlast any plastic equivalent by decades.

    Brass and antique-finish metal sunbursts, hand-cut tin stars, textile crowns and oversized ribbons all work as alternatives. The topper should relate visually to the rest of the tree – a crisp metal piece suits a modern tree, while a soft textile bow sits better on a traditional fir.

    Wrap each glass piece in tissue and store in a compartmented box rather than loose. Keep lights loosely coiled around a piece of card to prevent tangles. Label the outside so you know what's in there before lifting the box in December. A cool, dry storage space matters more than the exact container.

Serving Up A Feast Whilst traditional yuletide colours of red and green make an appearance in our take on Christmas table décor, we’ve given them a contemporary edge. Think vibrant textiles, playful crackers and a trail of fairy lights and ivy running through the centre. The gold accents found adorning the crockery and in the accessorising baubles lend the trend an opulent finish. Festive Florals This year, festive bouquets have found a new look. Over at Heal’s, we’re opting for sprigs of fragrant eucalyptus and natural green foliage. Whilst holly, ivy and poinsettia still hold a special place in our hearts, plants like eucalyptus offer a contemporary touch.
