    An armed wall light has a projecting arm that holds the light source away from the wall – usually 30-60cm depending on the design. This casts directional light across a defined area (a bed, a chair, a worktop) and creates more visual depth on the wall than a flush-mounted sconce. Regular wall sconces sit close to the wall and cast more diffuse light.

    Often yes – an armed light frees up the surface space a table lamp would occupy, projects the light source from a fixed correct height, and avoids the trailing cord of a plug-in lamp. The trade-off is permanence: an armed wall light commits to its position, while a table lamp can move with the room.

    30-45cm projection is comfortable for most uses – far enough to put the light source directly above a chair or bed, close enough not to feel intrusive in a smaller room. Longer projections (60cm+) work in larger rooms with high ceilings, where the proportional weight of the fitting suits the scale.

    A pair of armed wall lights either side of the bed can carry a small bedroom alone, particularly if dimmable. They handle reading, ambient atmosphere and getting-dressed brightness with the right bulb specification. Larger bedrooms generally still need a ceiling fitting or a floor lamp for general illumination.
