Wood Coffee Tables

A wooden coffee table introduces natural warmth and texture to any living room, grounding the space with timber grain and honest joinery. Heal's collection spans mid-century silhouettes, sculptural solid oak and modern walnut forms. Shop wood coffee tables to bring organic character to your scheme.

A coffee table generally sits at two-thirds the length of your sofa, with 30–45cm of space between the front of the sofa and the table's edge. Height should be within 2–5cm of the sofa seat cushion. These proportions keep the table useful for drinks and books without blocking movement.

Solid oak and walnut are among the most durable and widely-used hardwoods for coffee tables, with oak reading lighter and more Scandinavian, walnut warmer and richer. Ash and elm offer character-grained alternatives. Avoid softwoods like pine for daily use, as they dent more easily.

Use coasters for glasses and mats for hot drinks, and wipe spills immediately with a soft cloth. For oiled finishes, reapply wood oil every six to twelve months following the manufacturer's guidance. Keep the table away from radiators and direct sunlight, both of which can dry out the timber.

Wooden coffee tables can work particularly well in small rooms when chosen in a round or oval shape, as the lack of corners allows easier movement. Lighter timbers such as oak and ash also visually open up the space. Look for designs with slim profiles and lifted legs for a less heavy footprint.
