    Oak is one of the most practical timbers for coffee tables, hard enough to resist dents, with a grain that hides small marks and a colour that works across most living-room palettes. A natural-oil finish ages gracefully; a lacquered finish stays more uniform.

    Natural-oil or hardwax oil finishes allow the grain to remain tactile and age gracefully; they need an annual refresh to stay resilient against spills. Lacquered oak is more protective against water rings and scratches but doesn't develop patina.

    Dust with a soft cloth, wipe spills promptly and refresh the oil finish every 6-12 months. Water rings can be removed from oiled oak with a gentle sanding and re-oil; lacquered oak is less forgiving but rarely affected by the same issues.

    The table top should sit 2-4cm below the sofa cushion height, typically 38-45cm from the floor. Diameter or length should be roughly two-thirds of the sofa in front of it; leave 35-45cm between the sofa and the edge of the table for leg room.
