Vitra Chairs

Vitra chairs include some of the most influential pieces in modern design – the Eames DSW, the Panton, the Standard, the Aluminium Group, the Hal. Vitra holds the European licence rights for Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Jean Prouvé, which is why the brand's chair collection reads like a curated history of 20th-century seat design.

Vitra holds the European licence rights to produce Charles and Ray Eames furniture. Pieces produced by Vitra match the original designers' specifications and represent the only authorised European editions. Replicas exist in considerable numbers, but the proportions, materials and construction details give them away on close inspection. Buying through an authorised retailer guarantees authenticity.

The Eames DSW (Dining Side Wood) is consistently the top-seller – a moulded plastic shell on wooden dowel legs, available in around 20 colours. The Panton Chair (Verner Panton's single-piece moulded plastic design from 1959) is the second most popular. Both have remained in continuous production for decades.

Most are. The Eames DSW and Plastic Chairs are designed as everyday furniture – durable, washable, suitable for kitchens and dining rooms with children. The more delicate Vitra pieces (Standard Chair upholstered, Hal Wood) suit calmer rooms. Vitra's product pages publish suitability and wear specifications transparently.

A well-built Vitra piece (Eames Plastic Chair, Panton Chair, Standard Chair) should last 30+ years of family use. The frames rarely fail; replacement parts (cushions, glides, cross-bars) are available through the manufacturer for routine wear. Many Vitra chairs from the 1980s and 90s are still in active service in homes worldwide, which is the practical evidence of long-term durability.
