    Beside a reading armchair (with the head of the lamp angled over the chair, for task light), or at the end of a sofa next to a side table (for ambient light beside the seating). Avoid placing a floor lamp in a corner with no nearby furniture – the light has nothing to fall on and the lamp reads as stranded.

    The bottom of the shade should sit at roughly head height when seated – usually 130-150cm from the floor for most armchairs and sofas. That puts the light at the right angle to fall on the page without glare in your eyes. Adjustable-arm lamps (Anglepoise, Tolomeo Mega) handle this better than fixed-position designs.

    Tonally yes, identically no. Sharing a metal finish or a shade tone across all the lamps in the room reads as deliberate; matching exact models reads as showroom. Mix scale and silhouette within a tight palette of finishes – this is one of the most reliable ways to get a layered, considered lighting scheme.

    For ambient living-room use, around 600-1,200 lumens (a 60-100W equivalent LED). For reading use, look for higher output (1,500+ lumens) and choose a directional shade that focuses the light on the page rather than scattering it. Always specify dimmable bulbs and circuits so the output can shift with the time of day.

The Akari Light Sculptures are named after the Japanese word for ‘light’ in reference to their physical lightness and illumination. The inspiration behind the collection came from paper lanterns Noguchi observed at the Japanese town of Gifu. Today, each one is crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a family-run crafters based in Gifu.
