Matthew Hilton

Matthew Hilton is a British furniture designer whose chairs and tables have quietly shaped 30 years of Heal's collections, the Colombo chair, the Cross Extending Table, the signature Balzac armchair. His work pairs considered proportion with honest materiality, all produced in small-batch European workshops with traceable timber sources.

Hilton is one of Britain's most-published furniture designers, with a catalogue that spans the Colombo chair, the Balzac armchair and a long line of dining and coffee tables. The through-line is quiet proportion, the pieces don't announce themselves, they earn their place.

Production is split between established European workshops, timber frames in Lithuania, upholstery in the UK, glass and metal in Italy, each chosen for a specific skill. Hilton signs off prototypes personally, which keeps the detailing consistent across a wide catalogue.

The Balzac armchair is the most enduring, a deep, down-filled lounge chair that has been in production for over 30 years. The Cross Extending Table and the Colombo dining chair are equally recognised, each a cornerstone of contemporary British dining design.

The upholstered pieces are built on solid hardwood frames with serpentine-spring bases, designed to be reupholstered rather than replaced. The timber dining chairs use traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, which is why they are so often handed down within families.
