    Nero Marquina and Verde marble hide marks and etching better than paler stones, and are generally more forgiving for everyday use. Carrara is softer and more prone to light etching from acidic drinks, but the patina can be part of the character with a considered approach.

    Most quality marble side tables are supplied pre-sealed, but the sealant needs refreshing every 12-18 months for continued stain resistance. The product care notes will specify the recommended sealant; most DIY marble sealants work well on home furniture.

    Wipe spills promptly, particularly red wine, citrus, tomato and coffee, all of which can etch pale marble. A fabric runner or coasters for drinks protect the surface; the etching that does occur can usually be buffed out by a stone specialist.

    A small 40-50cm marble side table typically weighs 15-30kg, substantially more than timber equivalents. Check that any hollow floor (suspended timber joists) can take the load on one concentrated point, especially with the heavier rectangular pieces.
