    Hallways and corridors (where projecting fittings would catch on shoulders), stairwells (where the light needs to be flush against the wall to allow safe passage), tighter bedrooms, and as supplementary lighting in bathrooms or above wall-hung furniture. They work less well in larger rooms where the fitting would read as inadequate against the volume.

    Flush wall lights project their light outwards at eye level rather than down from above, which creates a different feel – warmer, more decorative, less institutional. Recessed downlights are cleaner from below but more functional in feel. The choice depends on whether the hallway should read as ambient and decorative or purely functional.
