Solid oak is the most forgiving – it handles spills, takes the occasional scratch in stride and can be sanded and re-oiled at home if needed. Walnut is darker and more refined but shows water rings more readily. Ash is light and contemporary; ideal if your room leans Scandi or modern. All three handle family life well with proper care.

Allow 90cm of clear walking space on every side of the table – that's the comfortable minimum for getting in and out of chairs. In a 4m room, that means a table no wider than 220cm; in a 3.5m room, a table no wider than 170cm. A round table reclaims corner space in a tighter rectangular room.

Matching is safe but can read static; mixing chairs that share a tonal palette is more interesting. A common approach is two armchairs at the heads with side chairs along the runs, or a bench on one side with chairs on the other. Aim for the chairs to share at least one element – timber, finish or seat colour – with the table.

Standard dining tables sit at 73-76cm tall, which suits chairs with a 45-47cm seat height. Counter-height tables (90cm) and bar-height tables (105cm) require correspondingly taller stools. Any pairing where the seat-to-tabletop gap is between 27 and 30cm will be comfortable for most adults.
