A coaster is one of the smallest pieces of homeware that makes a daily difference – proper protection for a wood or marble surface, and a small piece of considered design under every drink.     Cork and leather are the safest – both absorb condensation and don't conduct heat or cold to the surface below. Marble and ceramic coasters are heavier and more decorative, but cold drinks can cause condensation that pools at the edge of the coaster. For high-traffic family use, cork-backed leather is the practical default; marble for occasional or display use.

    A set of four covers most households for daily use. Six is a sensible upgrade for households that entertain regularly, and matches most drinkware sets. Larger sets (eight to twelve) are usually a wedding-list-scale acquisition for households planning to host.

    Tonally, the room. Dinnerware is moved on and off the dining table; coasters live on the coffee or side table all the time. Match the coaster palette to the surface they sit on (a marble coaster on a marble side table reads as part of the surface; a leather coaster on an oak side table picks up the warm timber tones).

    Quality coasters last decades – marble, brass and full-grain leather pieces age into character rather than degrading. Cheap printed-cardboard or thin-plastic coasters typically fail within months. As one of the most-used pieces of homeware in a busy living room, the difference is meaningful at a small per-piece cost.
