    A wall mirror gives back the most light when hung opposite a window, bouncing daylight deeper into the room. In hallways, hang a mirror above a console so it catches the view through to the front door. In dining rooms, an oversized mirror on the chimney-breast wall doubles the candlelight during evening meals and warms the whole room.

    A hallway mirror reads best at 80 to 120cm tall when hung vertically, or 60 to 80cm wide when hung horizontally above a console table. Match the mirror's width to around two-thirds of the console beneath it, so the pair reads as a designed grouping rather than an afterthought.

    Hang a wall mirror with the centre at 145 to 155cm from the floor, the same height as art. When hung above furniture, leave a 15 to 20cm gap between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the mirror. For tall, leaning mirrors, no hanging height applies, but do fit a safety strap to the wall.

    Round mirrors soften a wall of rectangular furniture and read as a sculptural object, working well above consoles and sideboards where the verticals are dominant. Rectangular mirrors suit vertical walls in bathrooms and between windows, where their shape reinforces the room's architecture rather than breaking against it.

Next, use your glass cleaner of choice and a microfiber cloth to clean the mirror, moving from top to bottom.
