Hang a decorative mirror opposite a window to bounce natural light deeper into the room, or above a console in a hallway for a practical and expansive first impression. Over mantelpieces, position the mirror so it reflects something worth seeing, such as artwork or a chandelier. Height should sit around 145cm from the floor to the centre.

A statement mirror should occupy roughly two-thirds of the wall or furniture piece beneath it, leaving breathing room at the edges. Over a console or sideboard, aim for a mirror that is no wider than the furniture. Oversized floor mirrors leaning against the wall look best at around 160–180cm tall.

Thin black metal, brushed brass and pale timber frames all read as modern, particularly in organic shapes like arched or circular forms. Avoid heavy carved frames if you want the mirror to feel contemporary. A simple matte black rim works across most schemes and adds graphic contrast.

A well-placed decorative mirror visibly expands a small room by reflecting light and doubling sightlines. For maximum effect, hang a large mirror opposite a window or at the end of a narrow hallway. Two smaller mirrors in a grid work well where a single oversized piece would overwhelm.
