Stools

Stools stretch across more of a home than most people give them credit for: a perching seat at the kitchen island, an extra chair when friends drop in, a low bench at the foot of a bed. Our collection brings together upholstered dressing stools, solid-wood kitchen perches, and sculptural occasional stools, each chosen for a specific room or role.

A stool is backless and unfixed in orientation, designed to be approached from any side and to slip under a counter or a desk when not in use. A chair has a back and a defined front, anchoring a seating position. Stools suit transient moments (a morning coffee, a five-minute chat); chairs suit settled sitting across a longer span.

A kitchen island of 1.8 to 2.4 metres seats three stools comfortably, giving 60cm of elbow room per person. Households that entertain at the island benefit from four, with one stored off-island until needed. For smaller peninsula counters under 1.5 metres, two stools usually read better than cramming in a third.

A standard UK kitchen island runs at 90cm worktop height, pairing with a 65 to 68cm seat-height stool. Bar-height counters at 105 to 110cm call for 75 to 80cm stools. Measure from the floor to the underside of the overhang, then subtract 25cm for a comfortable thigh clearance.

Upholstered kitchen stools work well when the fabric is rated 40,000 Martindale or above and cleans easily with a damp cloth. Leather and high-performance weaves handle splashes, while linen and untreated wools struggle. For households with young children, a wipe-clean leather or faux-leather seat tends to be the longer-lasting choice.
