    The top of the side table should sit level with or very slightly below the sofa's arm, usually 55 to 65cm from the floor. That height keeps drinks and books within reach without forcing you to twist, and stops the side table reading as a junior version of the coffee table in front of the sofa.

    Round side tables soften the sharp lines of upholstery and suit corner positions where four corners would snag. Square and rectangular tables work harder for storage, display and the kind of clean geometric pairing a modern living room benefits from, especially beside a sofa arm with a book and a lamp.

    A pair of matching side tables pushed together beside a sofa acts as a coffee table with the advantage of splitting for flexible use. Each table's height and material should still suit sofa-arm height, and the combined top should be large enough to carry drinks and a tray without feeling cramped.

    A coffee table serves everyone in the seating arrangement; a side table serves the single seat nearest to it. Most living rooms benefit from both, with the side table handling the evening-lamp job and the coffee table handling the communal tray. Smaller rooms can combine the two with a larger C-table tucked beside an armchair.
