Sheepskin Rugs & Cowhide Rugs

Sheepskin and cowhide rugs bring tactile warmth and instant character to a room, whether draped over an armchair or laid as a floor rug in front of a sofa. The collection covers British, New Zealand and Icelandic sheepskins alongside cowhide in natural and brindled colourways, each piece naturally unique and ethically sourced from the hide industry.

The Heal's sheepskin range is sourced from the meat industry as a by-product, so the hides are used rather than wasted. Provenance is listed per product, British, New Zealand and Icelandic sheepskins are the most common sources, each with its own handle and character.

Sheepskin is noticeably softer underfoot and as a throw, the wool pile is long and dense, particularly in the Icelandic sheepskins. Cowhide is structurally firmer and lies flatter, with a short-hair surface that reads more graphic than tactile.

Shake regularly and brush gently with a dog brush to keep the wool loft high. Spot-clean with a damp cloth; for full cleaning, a specialist sheepskin laundry is worth the cost. Avoid domestic washing machines, which distort the leather backing.

Most sheepskin and cowhide rugs work well over underfloor heating, provided the floor surface stays below 27°C. The leather backing conducts heat efficiently, so the wool pile warms up from underneath, part of their appeal in colder rooms.
