Each spring sits inside its own fabric pocket, allowing it to compress independently of the springs around it. The benefit is twofold: better individual support across the body's weight points, and reduced motion transfer when one partner moves – important for couples where one sleeps lighter than the other. Bonded-spring (open-coil) mattresses don't isolate motion this way.

1,500 springs in a king size is the comfortable benchmark for a quality everyday mattress; 2,000-3,000 sits in the premium range; over 3,000 is largely marketing-led for most sleepers. Spring count matters less above 2,000 than the quality of the springs themselves and the natural fillings layered above them.

Body weight is the main factor: under 12 stone usually suits soft to medium; 12-16 stone suits medium to firm; over 16 stone usually wants firm or extra-firm support. Sleeping position matters too – side sleepers benefit from softer tension to allow shoulder and hip relief; back and stomach sleepers tend to prefer firmer support. A quality pocket-sprung mattress with natural fillings lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement – substantially longer than the 7-year industry average for spring mattresses. The springs themselves rarely fail; the fillings compress and the comfort degrades gradually. Rotate (and turn if double-sided) every three months to even out wear.
