Pocket Sprung Mattresses

A pocket-sprung mattress lets each spring respond independently, supporting the body without transferring movement to the other side of the bed. Our handmade pocket-sprung collection covers soft, medium and firm tensions in single, double, king and super-king sizes, lined with natural wool, cotton and silk fillings and built in the UK.

Each spring sits inside its own fabric pocket, allowing it to compress independently of the springs around it. The benefit is twofold: better individual support across the body's weight points, and reduced motion transfer when one partner moves – important for couples where one sleeps lighter than the other. Bonded-spring (open-coil) mattresses don't isolate motion this way.

1,500 springs in a king size is the comfortable benchmark for a quality everyday mattress; 2,000-3,000 sits in the premium range; over 3,000 is largely marketing-led for most sleepers. Spring count matters less above 2,000 than the quality of the springs themselves and the natural fillings layered above them.

Body weight is the main factor: under 12 stone usually suits soft to medium; 12-16 stone suits medium to firm; over 16 stone usually wants firm or extra-firm support. Sleeping position matters too – side sleepers benefit from softer tension to allow shoulder and hip relief; back and stomach sleepers tend to prefer firmer support. The Heal's mattress team can guide a decision in store.

A quality pocket-sprung mattress with natural fillings lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement – substantially longer than the 7-year industry average for spring mattresses. The springs themselves rarely fail; the fillings compress and the comfort degrades gradually. Rotate (and turn if double-sided) every three months to even out wear.
