Soft Mattresses

A soft mattress cradles side sleepers and lighter builds, allowing the shoulders and hips to sink in just enough that the spine stays in a straight line through the night. Our soft mattress collection spans hand-tufted pocket-sprung designs with wool and cashmere fillings alongside memory-foam options, each built in the UK for the long haul.

Soft mattresses suit side sleepers, where a firmer surface would push back against the shoulder and hip rather than letting them sink into healthy alignment. They also work well for lighter sleepers under around 65kg, where a medium or firm mattress doesn't compress enough to contour the body and can feel unsupportive through the night.

A mattress that's too soft can worsen back pain by letting the hips drop below the line of the shoulders, creating a curve in the spine. For lower-back pain, a medium-firm surface suits most sleepers, while shoulder-specific discomfort often responds better to a softer top layer on a supportive base, for example a pocket-sprung mattress with a cashmere topper.

Firmness is usually rated 1 to 10, with soft mattresses landing at 3 to 4 and plush or ultra-soft designs closer to 2. Anything softer than a 2 becomes impractical for most adults, as the surface loses the structure needed to support the hips and lower back through the night.

Pocket-sprung soft mattresses with natural-fibre fillings compress by 10 to 15% in the first year, a process called settlement, which is expected and not a fault. Rotate the mattress every three months during year one to distribute the settlement evenly, then twice yearly afterwards to keep the surface even across both sides of the bed.
