Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck is one of the most prolific designers of the last 40 years, with a catalogue that spans the Louis Ghost chair for Kartell, the Juicy Salif citrus squeezer for Alessi and the Gun lamp for Flos. The Heal's Starck collection covers furniture and lighting produced under licence by his long-standing manufacturing partners.

Starck is best known for bringing sculptural, often playful design to mass production, the transparent Louis Ghost chair for Kartell, the aluminium Juicy Salif for Alessi, the Ara lamp for Flos. His catalogue is one of the broadest in contemporary design.

The major long-running partnerships are with Kartell (Louis Ghost, Masters, Bourgie), Flos (Miss K, Ara, Romeo), Emeco (Navy, Kong) and Magis. Every production piece is licensed and overseen by Starck's Paris studio.

The Kartell Louis Ghost is the only authentic version, and has been since the chair's launch in 2002. The market is full of copies in inferior materials, but the original uses a single moulded transparent polycarbonate body that is considerably stronger and more optically clean.

The sculptural pieces, Louis Ghost, Bourgie lamp, Masters chair, are designed to sit as visual statements regardless of trend, and 20 years of production have confirmed their staying power. The most fashion-forward of his commissions age less well, which is typically reflected in which pieces remain in production.
