Patterned Cushions

Patterned cushions are where a scheme finds its voice. Woven geometrics, painterly florals, ticking stripes and hand-embroidered motifs, layered by scale rather than matched into a set. Feather and down inners hold the shape so the print reads as considered, the accent that lifts a plain sofa without shouting over the rest of the room.

Vary the scale rather than the colour: pair a large-scale floral with a small geometric and a fine stripe, keeping one shared tone running across all three. Odd numbers usually look more collected than even, and a single plain cushion between patterns lets the eye rest.

A three-seater reads best with three to five cushions, mixing one or two patterns with a plain or textured piece so the print does not overwhelm the seat. A two-seater suits two or three. Start with fewer and only add if the sofa still feels underdressed.

Bold seasonal prints move with trends, so they are best treated as the affordable, changeable layer over plain sofas and neutral throws. Classic patterns such as ticking stripe, ikat or simple geometrics tend to stay current for years and mix easily with new pieces.

Feather and duck-down inners hold a crisp shape and plump back with a shake, which keeps a patterned front looking sharp. Sizing the inner slightly larger than the cover gives a full, tailored finish rather than the flat, empty corners of an underfilled cushion.
