    Marble coffee tables are practical for everyday use when cared for properly, as the stone is heat-resistant and hard-wearing. Use coasters for oils, wines and citrus, all of which can etch the surface, and wipe spills immediately with a clean cloth. Honed marble hides marks better than polished.

    Wipe the surface daily with a soft cloth and warm water, using a pH-neutral stone cleaner once a week. Avoid vinegar, bleach and citrus-based cleaners, which can etch the marble. Reseal the stone every six to twelve months with a dedicated marble sealer to protect against staining.

    Marble is a porous natural stone, so it can stain if spills are left on the surface, particularly red wine, coffee and oils. Sealing the stone significantly reduces absorption, and honed finishes are more forgiving than polished. Blotting spills immediately is the single most important habit.

    Matte black and brushed brass bases are the most versatile pairings for a marble top, both of which emphasise the stone's veining rather than competing with it. Solid oak bases add warmth for Scandinavian schemes, while polished chrome suits more classic interiors. The base sets the tone for the room.
