    A living room of around 4m by 5m wants three or four lamps to feel properly lit – a floor lamp by the seating, a table lamp on a side table, a reading lamp by an armchair, and ideally one more piece for accent. A single ceiling light leaves the corners of the room dark; layered lamps fix that.

    Tonally yes, identically no. A pair of matching table lamps either side of a sofa reads as deliberate; three or four identical lamps around a room reads as showroom. Mix scale and style within a controlled palette of metal finishes and shade colours – the room reads as collected rather than co-ordinated.

    Warm white (2700K-3000K) for living rooms and bedrooms; neutral white (3500K) for desks and reading lamps. Choose dimmable bulbs throughout so each lamp can shift between task and ambient mode through the evening. LED bulbs in this range last 15-20 years and use a fraction of the energy.

    In smaller rooms, yes – a well-placed mix of table, floor and wall lamps can replace a central ceiling fitting and give a softer, more flattering result. Larger rooms with high ceilings often still benefit from an overhead source for general illumination, with lamps doing the layering. Either way, dimmable circuits matter.

The Akari Light Sculptures are named after the Japanese word for ‘light’ in reference to their physical lightness and illumination. The inspiration behind the collection came from paper lanterns Noguchi observed at the Japanese town of Gifu. Today, each one is crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a family-run crafters based in Gifu.
