    Overhead fittings cast shadows on the face from above – fine for general bathroom illumination, poor for shaving, applying makeup or any task at the mirror. Wall lights either side of the mirror throw light directly onto the face, eliminating the shadows. The functional difference is substantial; most professional bathroom designs use mirror-side wall lights as standard.

    Around eye level – usually 1.6-1.7m from the floor, level with the centre of the mirror. The bulb itself should sit at or slightly above the eye line so light falls forward onto the face rather than down. Mount the pair an equal distance from the mirror (15-20cm to the side is typical).

    IP44 minimum for fittings near a basin (Zone 2). For most domestic bathrooms with a mirror over a vanity, IP44 is sufficient. Always check the rating on the product page; using under-rated fittings in wet zones is both unsafe and a building regulation breach.

    Yes – a pair of dimmable bathroom wall lights can carry a small bathroom alone, particularly when paired with proper natural light. The light is at eye level (better for use) and the absence of overhead glare reads more spa-like. Larger bathrooms still benefit from supplementary ceiling fittings for general illumination.
