Allow at least 60cm of table edge per person for comfortable dining, so a table for six should be around 180cm long. For round tables, a 120cm diameter seats four, while 150cm seats six. Leave 90–120cm of clear space around the table for chairs to pull out and for diners to walk past.

Solid oak is the most popular hardwood for dining tables, thanks to its durability, grain character and wide availability. Walnut reads as richer and more formal, while ash offers lighter, more Scandinavian character. Avoid softwoods like pine, which mark easily under daily use.

Use placemats and coasters for hot and cold items, and wipe spills immediately with a soft cloth. For oiled tables, reapply wood oil every six to twelve months following the manufacturer's care notes. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators, which can cause timber to split or warp.

Extending dining tables are a smart choice for homes that entertain occasionally, letting a compact six-seater become an eight or ten-seater for dinners. Modern extension mechanisms are robust and discreet, with integrated leaves that store within the table. Expect to pay slightly more than a fixed equivalent.
