    Wall lights are traditionally hardwired, but many modern designs include a plug-in option with a visible fabric cord running to the nearest socket, making retrofitting straightforward in rented homes or rooms without existing wall wiring. Hardwired fittings always produce the cleaner final look, so weigh up the cost of an electrician against the visual tidiness the wiring delivers.

    Wall lights beside a bed sit 120 to 140cm from the floor, above the mattress line but within arm's reach for the switch. In hallways, place sconces 160 to 180cm up to clear head height.
