Vitra Lighting

Vitra holds the licence to produce Isamu Noguchi's Akari Light Sculptures alongside its main furniture range – the washi paper and bamboo lanterns Noguchi designed from 1951 onwards, still made in Gifu, Japan, by the Ozeki family workshop using techniques unchanged for centuries. The collection at Heal's covers table, floor and pendant Akari pieces.

The Vitra lighting range at Heal's centres on the Akari Light Sculptures – Isamu Noguchi's washi paper and bamboo lanterns, produced in Gifu, Japan. The collection covers more than 80 individual designs across table, floor and pendant pieces, in numbered sizes (1A, 5A, 9A and so on).

Yes. Vitra acts as the European distributor for Akari pieces produced by the Ozeki family workshop in Gifu, Japan – the same workshop that has produced the lanterns since Noguchi began the series in 1951. Construction, materials and techniques are unchanged from the original 1951 designs.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush; never use water or solvents, which mark and warp the washi paper. Keep the lantern away from direct sunlight to prevent the paper yellowing. With careful handling, an Akari lantern lasts decades – the workshop in Gifu still services pieces sold in the 1950s.

Warm-white LED bulbs (2700K) at low wattage – usually 25W equivalent (around 250 lumens). The light should glow through the paper rather than blast through it. Higher-output bulbs can scorch the paper over time and dull the diffused effect that's central to the design.
