Urban Apothecary

Urban Apothecary is a British candle brand producing hand-poured scented candles, room diffusers and fragranced bath products from a London workshop. The collection runs from bestsellers including English Pear & Freesia and Italian Bergamot through seasonal limited editions, each poured in small batches using refined natural waxes and complex fragrance blends.

Urban Apothecary candles are hand-poured in London, with the workshop handling the full production chain from wax blending through to final labelling. The London base allows the brand to run short-batch seasonal collections and bespoke commissions alongside the main range, which wouldn't be practical with a volume overseas production.

The standard 300g Urban Apothecary candle burns for approximately 70 hours when lit in 2 to 3-hour sessions, which is the optimal burn pattern for a scented candle. Shorter 10-minute burns waste the cold-throw potential; longer 5-hour burns tunnel the wax and shorten total burn time. Trim the wick to 5mm before each burn to maintain a clean flame.

Candles release fragrance through heat, so the scent only throws while the candle is lit. Diffusers release fragrance continuously through the evaporation of fragranced oil up rattan reeds, giving a consistent background note across weeks without lighting anything. Most homes use both: diffusers in permanently occupied rooms, candles for considered evening moments.

Urban Apothecary uses fragrance loads at the higher end of the industry standard, typically 8 to 10% of the total candle weight, which produces a strong throw across standard UK living rooms. Cheaper candles at 5 to 6% loads struggle to scent rooms beyond a few metres, so the higher concentration is part of what justifies the price.
