    The top of the table should sit level with, or slightly below, the arm of the chair or sofa it serves. In most living rooms that's 50-60cm; by a bed, match the top of the mattress so a lamp throws light across it rather than into the pillows. Getting the height right matters more than the footprint.

    A 30cm diameter top holds a lamp, a glass and a book – below that, you're down to just the lamp. If the table needs to work harder than ornament, aim for a minimum of 35-40cm square or diameter. Round tops also feel smaller in a tight corner because there are no protruding edges to catch on.

    Marble adds weight without bulk, which stops a small table looking flimsy next to a full-size sofa. Timber reads warmer and softens a contemporary scheme. Powder-coated steel is the lightest visually, good for rooms where the side table needs to disappear. Glass works in very small spaces by letting the eye pass through it.
