    Above sideboards (where the rectangular format echoes the silhouette of the piece below), in hallways (where vertical orientation makes a corridor feel taller), above beds (where a horizontal orientation reflects the room), and over bathroom vanities. The format adapts to most rooms because rectangles match most architectural elements.

    The mirror should be 60-75% of the width of the console it sits above – a 100cm console suits a 60-75cm wide mirror. Centre on the console rather than centring on the wall (these are usually different points). Hang at eye level for the average user, around 1.5m to 1.6m from floor to centre.

    Vertical orientation makes rooms feel taller (good for hallways, narrow alcoves and small bedrooms). Horizontal orientation makes rooms feel wider (good for above beds, in tight bathrooms, on long sideboards). Both are valid; the orientation should match what you want the room to feel rather than just the shape of the mirror.

    Many can, but check the mirror is rated for bathroom humidity – standard wall mirrors can fail (silvering oxidises) in high-humidity environments over time. Properly bathroom-rated mirrors have a sealed back coating; framed pieces should ideally use marine-treated or sealed timber. The Heal's bathroom mirror category specifies which pieces are safe.

Smudged fingerprints and specks of dust are less than desirable when it comes to mirrors. Luckily, it’s an easy thing to fix using items you’ll already have in your house. If there are more stubborn marks, start off by tackling them using a cotton pad and some rubbing alcohol. Next, use your glass cleaner of choice and a microfiber cloth to clean the mirror, moving from top to bottom.
