Northern

Northern is a Norwegian design house producing lighting and furniture rooted in the Nordic material tradition, with commissions from Morten & Jonas, Hans Verstuyft and Daniel Rybakken. The catalogue covers sculptural pendants, portable lamps and considered occasional furniture, all produced to Oslo's exacting design standards in European workshops.

Northern's catalogue spans sculptural lighting (Gear, Oaki, Reveal), compact portable lamps (Blush, Brookhaven) and considered occasional furniture. The studio's sensibility is quiet, materially led Norwegian design, less graphic than Danish, less industrial than Swedish.

Design is led from Oslo, with production split between European workshops chosen for each material. Blown-glass pendants are produced in Poland and Czech Republic; metalwork runs through Norwegian fabricators; upholstery is produced regionally in Scandinavia.

The Blush and Brookhaven portable lamps use rechargeable lithium batteries with USB-C charging and 10-20 hours of light per charge. They are IP44-rated for outdoor use, which makes them practical for garden tables and sheltered balconies as well as indoors.

The Gear pendant over a dining table reads immediately as Norwegian design without leaning on clichés, and the Oaki floor lamp works as an anchor in reading corners and open-plan living rooms. The smaller table lamps layer well with existing schemes.
