Multi-Arm Ceiling Lights

A multi-arm ceiling light is the right answer when a single pendant won't cover the room or the design brief – three, five or seven light sources from a single fitting that distributes light evenly and reads as a sculptural piece in its own right.     Rooms with high ceilings and a need for distributed light – open-plan living-dining spaces, double-height halls, large bedrooms over a 3m ceiling. The format spreads light across the room rather than concentrating it directly below the fitting, which is what a single pendant tends to do. Stairwells with vertical drops also suit multi-arm pieces particularly well.

    Not necessarily – it depends on the form. A low-key brass piece with three arms reads as quietly elegant; a maximalist crystal chandelier reads as theatrical. Choose the style to match the room's overall register; the multi-arm format itself doesn't dictate drama, the materials and detailing do.

    Minimum 2.6m – tighter than that and the arms feel oppressive overhead. 2.7m to 3m is the comfortable range for most fittings; ceilings over 3m can take genuinely large pieces (60-100cm diameter). Allow 200cm of clear headroom from the lowest point of the fitting to the floor below.

    Most multi-arm pieces are sold with the bulbs unspecified, since the choice depends on the room and brightness preference. As a guide, total output of around 200 lumens per square metre of floor space gives proper ambient light. A 30-square-metre living-dining room therefore wants around 6,000 lumens total – distributed across the arms with dimmable bulbs.
