Maria Portugal Terracotta

Terracotta the way central Portugal has made it for generations. Thrown on the wheel, glazed by hand and fired in wood-fuelled kilns, each cooking and serving piece keeps the small irregularities that mean a person made it. Honest, hard-wearing clay that ages into character and moves straight from the oven to the table.

The pottery is based in central Portugal, where a small family workshop handles throwing, glazing and kiln-firing in-house. The location connects the brand to a long Portuguese ceramic tradition, with local clay and traditional wood-firing central to the character of each piece.

Traditional terracotta is oven-safe up to around 220 degrees when pre-seasoned and warmed gradually. Rapid temperature changes, such as frozen to hot or oven to a cold worktop, can crack the clay, so consistent gradual heating and cooling preserves a piece for years.

Season new terracotta by soaking in water for an hour, then warming gently in the oven. Wash by hand with warm water and a soft brush, avoiding soap where possible as unglazed clay absorbs it. Air-dry fully before storing to prevent mildew.

Most terracotta is not dishwasher-safe, as heat and detergent dry out the clay and can cause surface crazing. Hand-washing in warm water is the standard, and it also preserves the seasoning built up over years of use. The product page confirms per item.
