    Start with the table linen (or a runner on a bare timber table), then layer chargers under the dinner plates. Add candlesticks of varying heights down the centre, interspersed with small ornamental pieces, foliage clippings or dried florals. Napkin rings, name-place cards and subtle scatter details complete the setting.

    Restrained palettes of two or three tones look more considered than mixing every Christmas colour. Gold with cream and deep green; silver with white and pale blue; burgundy with warm brass all work well. The table decorations should complement the existing room tones rather than imposing a jarring theme.
